UL's Industrial Control Equipment Standard Transition from UL 508 to UL 60947

Industry has requested for harmonization of requirements with respect to Industrial Control Equipment (ICE) related industrial control standards. UL has listened to feedback and in collaboration with members of industry, the standard for Industrial Control Equipment UL 508 has been harmonized with the selected IEC standard for Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear IEC 60947 series.

Product standards that currently reference UL 508 will be revised to include these harmonized standards. These harmonization efforts have resulted in the following new UL standards:

UL 60947-1 - Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear - Part 1: General Rules
Issued: January 26, 2007

UL 60947-4-1A - Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear - Part 4-1: Contactors and motor-starters-Electromechanical contactors and motor-starters
Issued: January 26, 2007

Changes in UL's certification program related to UL 60947-1 and UL 60947-4-1A may affect your UL certified products. The affected CCNs are as follows: NLDX, NLRV, NKJH, and NKCR (overload relays only).

Below is the table of three transition phases.

Date

Transition Phase

Before January 26, 2012

Product submittals will be evaluated to UL 60947-4-1A unless customers specifically request in writing that they be evaluated using UL 508.

January 26, 2012 - January 26, 2017

New product submittals will be evaluated to UL 60947-4-1A only; however revisions to existing products may still be evaluated using UL 508 if customers specifically request this in writing.

Effective January 27, 2017

All UL certified products must meet UL 60947-4-1A only. Existing UL certification to UL 508 will be withdrawn.

Action Required

If you currently have a product certified to UL 508, you will need to contact UL before September 26, 2016 in order to convert your existing file to UL 60947-4-1A. Please request a quotation for the UL 60947 transition by either contacting your local sales representative or by using our online Request for Quote. In the online Request for Quote, please search for your product category and select "Standard Transition" under Administrative Services on the Services and Deliverables page.

Please note that if you have any product or sales literature that references UL 508, you should consider the need to revise such literature to reference UL 60947 as your certified product lines transition to listing under the UL 60947 series.

If you have any questions related to the above, please contact Salvatore Porcillo at Salvatore.Porcillo@us.ul.com or at 631.546.2620.
