Underwriters Laboratories (UL) announce their presence at the up coming Light+Building 2008 as the world’s primary global certification body. Frankfurt – 06 - 11 April 2008 - Pav. 4.2 – Stand G38 – Technical Lighting Area

London, United Kingdom, 06. Apr 08

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the world’s leading safety testing and certification organisation, will be exhibiting at Light+Building (Pav. 4.2, Stand G38, Technical Lighting Area), taking place from 6th -11th April at the international Messe Frankfurt.

Light+Building 2008 represents the ideal marketplace for the whole of the international lighting industry. UL’s participation reconfirms their position as the primary global certification partner. By virtue of their unparalleled expertise in this industry, UL is able to offer support to manufacturers exporting all types and varieties of lighting products all around the world. UL is presenting a wide service portfolio designed to simplify product access to both the North American and Global market.

Within their service portfolio Underwriters Laboratories boast certification and testing services in accordance with UL and Canadian Standards of Safety, as well as combining international services according to IEC and Cenelec EN standards for global market access. This is in line with UL’s proactive and consistent growth within the global market access arena over the last decade.

Specifically, UL will be launching 2 brand new campaigns for lighting manufacturers at the Light+Building Exhibition. The first, the so called “GMA Campaign” (Global Markt Access), is tailored for manufacturers applying for the IEC “CB” assessment report in the normal way, the campaign allows them to gain the widely recognised “ENEC” mark and “D-mark” for free.
The second one, is aimed to promote a service package for full access to North America, which includes the USA, Canada and Mexico. To all manufacturers applying for the combined Canadian and US version of the UL mark “cULus”, UL will offer the NOM Mark for Mexican market access, again, for free.

UL will be also launching some new services specifically for the lighting industry

Lighting Design Consulting Service specific for Contract business. This is a new service UL developed to assist contract designers, architects and lighting manufacturers in the design phase of the product life cycle. To be successful it is necessary for products to meet mandated requirements and compliance codes specified by Authorities Having Jurisdictions, who have the power to dictate whether businesses are allowed to operate and install products all over the US territories.

ENERGY STAR certification. As technology advances and more energy-efficient products make it to the marketplace, ENERGY STAR reviews the guidelines for each product category and strengthens them as necessary to ensure that, generally, only the top 25% of products in each category can earn the label. ENERGY STAR is a government program that offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions. UL can certify that lighting products meet the strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US EPA and the US DOE to use the label on their product.

LED powered luminaires: Of all the revolutionary technologies under development in the lighting world, LEDs are without a doubt the ones that are most radically changing the market.
In order to ensure that this new technology enjoys the same level of acceptance and consumer confidence as other lighting technologies, in 2007, UL published OOI UL 8750 Outline of Investigation for Light Emitting Diode Light Sources for Use in Lighting Products, detailing a set of requirements meant specifically for this technology.
